Angola’s Bold Action: Dismantling a Major Cryptocurrency Mining Operation

 

In a decisive move, Angolan authorities have dismantled what was set to become the country’s largest cryptocurrency mining center, signaling a strong stance against unregulated activities in the crypto space.

The operation took place in Quiminha, Icolo e Bengo, where officials discovered a sophisticated mining setup involving five shipping containers retrofitted with state-of-the-art equipment. This facility housed electrical infrastructure worth over €3.3 million, including 15 transformers and high-performance computer hardware. Authorities estimate the site was generating over 3.32 Bitcoin daily—equivalent to a staggering €310,000 in profit.

The Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) revealed that three Chinese nationals were arrested during the operation. The facility contained an array of equipment, including advanced computer systems, cooling fans, air filters, and other components critical for crypto mining. The authorities also seized large quantities of ferrous materials, such as aluminum from beverage cans and e-waste, which were reportedly being exported under the guise of legitimate activities.

This recent bust follows a similar operation earlier in the month in Sequele, also in Icolo e Bengo, where nine individuals—four Chinese nationals and five Angolans—were apprehended for their involvement in another illicit mining network.

These coordinated efforts underscore Angola’s commitment to curbing unauthorized mining activities, protecting its energy resources, and ensuring that the cryptocurrency industry aligns with the country’s regulations and economic goals.
